The Short Stirling was the first four-engine British heavy bomber of World War II.
The design was high-wing, had four engines and a cabin projecting over the fuselage.
The airframe was made entirely of metal.
The first bombers were used from the late 1940s to equip the Royal Air Force's bomber command squadrons.
Operational readiness was reached in January 1941 and the first war action took place in February 1941 against logistic facilities in Rotterdam.
The Stirling MK. could carry a substantial payload of over 6000 kg of bombs and was armed with eight 7.7mm machine guns for defense.
The direct successor to the Mk.I version was the Mk.III, fitted with new and improved Bristol Hercules XVI engines and improved defensive armament.
