The aircraft that fought in the Battle of Britain were due for significant modernisation.
While still in development, however, the Luftwaffe introduced its latest variant of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, which was shooting down Spitfires in large numbers - it was urgent to act.
The Spitfire Mk.V was effectively an improved airframe of the Mk.II, fitted with the latest version of the Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft greater high-altitude performance and this variant would eventually equip more than 140 RAF squadrons.
