During Royal Air Force air operations in the 1991 Gulf War, the effectiveness of Iraqi air defences meant that the Tornado and Jaguar had to fly at higher altitudes, reducing their effectiveness.
They needed the support of the RAF's ageing Blackburn Buccaneer jets with their "Pave Spike" laser targeting system to effectively use "smart" munitions.
The problem was that these aircraft had been left behind at their home base in Scotland.
Twelve Buccaneers in their newly applied "desert camouflage" and with their laser targeting systems had to be prepared and flown for operations in the Persian Gulf, and in just a few days the self-styled "Sky Pirates" were on the move.
