
Although acquired at a time of great uncertainty for the British aviation industry, it proved to be a capable and popular aircraft in British service.
As the RAF already had Phantoms originally intended for the Royal Navy in service at Leuchars Air Base in Fife, the departure of HMS Ark Royal in 1978 meant that it also inherited the rest of the Fleet Air Arm's Phantom fleet.
43 and 111 Squadrons used the Phantom FG.1 to defend British airspace until 1989, when they both converted to the BAe Tornado F.3.
