On June 30, 1941, the XF6F-1 prototype was ordered. The XF6F-3 made its first flight in June 1942. However, this aircraft lacked horsepower and performance was unsatisfactory. The engine was immediately replaced with a powerful P&WR-2800 Double Wasp.
Delivery of mass-produced aircraft began in November 1942. The first F6F unit VF-9 was founded in January 1943. Training began on the aircraft carrier Essex as the best striker to defeat the Zero Fighter.
By 1943, 2,545 F6F-3s had been delivered. 252 aircraft were loaned to the United Kingdom under a loan agreement; From July 1943 he was assigned to the British Fleet Task Force. In December she took part in real combat operations and some of them were involved in operations against Japan in the Indian Ocean.
The F6F-5 is equipped with the same R-2800-10W engine as the late F6F-3, but this is a production model with slightly revised hood, windshield, ailerons and tail section. The rear viewing window behind the movable windshield has also disappeared. In addition, bulletproof equipment has been strengthened.
The F6F has a large fuselage relative to the engine power, although it was heavy and not a masterpiece in terms of performance. It is robust, has good mobility and has excellent bulletproof equipment. It withstood fire well and showed little wear. Total production was 12,272 aircraft. Furthermore, it was fortunate that Japan took some time to develop a successor to the Zero Fighter. He left behind a spectacular war record that exceeded his abilities.
