This distinctive “bent-wing” aircraft gained notoriety in the early stages of the war, when Germany had virtual air superiority.
The Stuka's design incorporated several innovative features, including automatic dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft would recover from its dive attack even if the pilot became unconscious due to the acceleration.
It soon became a symbol of the German “Blitzkrieg” in the first phase of World War II, providing air support for the Wehrmacht’s tank divisions.
Used extensively by the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, where it showed its weaknesses compared to the faster and well-armed modern fighters such as the Hurricane and Spitfire.
