The Grumman F-14 was developed in part based on experience with the F-111, a multi-role aircraft designed by General Dynamics, whose Navy version, the F111B, was built by Grumman.
The F-14A first flew on December 21, 1970, and production models entered service with the squadrons beginning in 1973. Squadrons VF-1 and VF-2 accompanied the aircraft carrier Enterprise's final voyage to Vietnam but never saw combat action.
The Tomcat only came into action in 1981, when it shot down two Libyan Su-22s in a battle over the Gulf of Sirte. Since then, the F-14 has been modernized several times and took part in various conflicts in the Middle East (Iran-Iraq War, First and Second Gulf Wars), as well as in operations over the former Yugoslavia and smaller skirmishes over the Mediterranean.
