It is a development of the Su-27 "Flanker" and was originally known as the Su-27K.
The aircraft first entered service in 1995 aboard the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.
It was officially commissioned in August 1998 and from that point on was designated "Su-33".
Only 24 aircraft were produced.
