The Me 309 concept was developed by Messerschmitt around mid-1940 as a radical development of the Bf 109.
The new aircraft was to be equipped with a pressurized cabin, a retractable radiator and a nose gear.
Engines with a planned power of 1700 to 1800 were to be used for the DB 603 and Jumo 213.
The Me 309 was to have a heavy armament of several cannons without the need for attachment in aerodynamically unfavorable containers under the wing.
The Reich Air Ministry (RLM) put the Me 309 on the order list in 1941, and the design work was completed by the end of the year.
