This project was developed in response to the RLM's 1941 request for a new destroyer to replace the Bf 110 in a short time and at minimal cost.
Messerschmitt responded with the Me 609, which was to use the Me 309 project as the basis for a new fighter.
The arrangement of all the wheels was very unusual.
The Me 609 would have had its cockpit in the port fuselage, with the starboard side smoothed.
Two versions were planned, a heavy fighter with four or six MK 108 cannons and a fast bomber variant with two 30 mm MK 108 cannons and a 1000 kg bomb load under the fuselages.
