The An-225 "Mriya" was developed in the Ukrainian SSR for the needs of the Soviet space program.
In the 80s of the 20th century, the Soviet Union completed its work on the "Buran" shuttle and needed carrier aircraft to deliver the shuttle to the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
The first and only aircraft was built in 1988 at the Kyiv Machine-Building Plant.
The design of the An-225 follows many technical features of the An-124, for example: the fuselage has the same cross-sections (but is longer), the wing console was pretty much the same, the landing gear used the same scheme, but with an increased number of wheels (32 pieces).
The aircraft was powered by 6 D-18T engines (the same type used in An-124).
The single vertical stabilizer, common in aerodynamic schemes of transport aircraft, was changed to a twin tail with an oversized, backward-curved horizontal stabilizer.
The twin tail was essential to allow the aircraft to carry large, heavy external loads that would disrupt the airflow around a conventional tail.
Unlike the An-124, the An-225 was not intended for tactical air transport and was not designed for short-field operations.
The aircraft was first shown to the public on February 1, 1989.
A few months later, the An-225 carried Buran on its back to Baikonur.
The An-225 Mriya aircraft set 240 world records.
After the completion of the “Energy – Buran” space program, An-225 was and is used for transporting oversized cargo over long distances.
The only airworthy example of the Antonov An-225 was destroyed at its home base in Hostomel, Ukraine, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
