The first of two prototypes was test flown in March 1956.
Production of the modified glider began in 1957 at the Let Kunovice aircraft factory.
This company produced these all-metal high-wing gliders, designated L-13 Blanik, until 1978 with a total of 2616 aircraft produced.
The modernised version L-13A was produced in small series in 1981-82, using reinforced wings from engine-powered Vivat gliders.
The Blanik was very popular thanks to its flying qualities and robust all-metal construction and was exported to every continent except Antarctica.
It was flown or still flies in forty countries around the world.
