With the transition of the Reichswehr to the Wehrmacht, efforts to replace the large number of different trucks in army service with a standardized vehicle with optimized properties for front-line service increased. The result was the "light all-terrain standard truck 6x6 type HWA 526 D", or "standard diesel" for short, which was manufactured in the same design by almost all well-known German truck manufacturers. Its robustness, reliability and superior off-road capability made it a legend in the first years of the war. This publication traces the development history, procurement background and numerous variants of the standard diesel in detail in many unpublished photos.
