In 1976, the FIA introduced a new Group 5 with specific rules reserved for "special" production cars in the international racing scene. The new regulations prescribed a body width similar to that of the production cars.
However, larger mudguards could be fitted to this to take advantage of the increased track widths and oversized tyres.
BMW entered the Group 5 competition with a special version of its new top model, the E21 "320".
A new aerodynamic profile with large wings was developed and a powerful 300 hp engine was fitted.
The car was successfully used by the Munich manufacturer's works team and also formed the basis for training young up-and-coming drivers.
