Rocket artillery plays an important role in modern armies.
One of their main advantages is the ability to saturate enemy positions with simultaneous mass fire.
During World War II, rocket artillery was still in its infancy, although several effective systems were developed by the parties to the conflict (e.g. the Russian Katyusha and the German Nebelwerfer).
One of Germany's first rocket weapon systems was the Heavy Throwing Device 41.
This weapon was essentially a wooden or steel frame that could hold crates of rockets.
The boxes would be tilted at a certain angle towards the enemy and the missiles could then be fired.
The rockets were either 280 mm in diameter for HE or 320 mm for incendiary rockets, the former having a range of 1920 m and the latter 2195 m.
When introduced in 1941, its accuracy was poor, but the “howling cow” could have a devastating effect on enemy positions and morale.
