This chassis was also used for the M107 self-propelled gun and the M578 mountain tank.
The M110 howitzer first entered service with the US Army in 1963 and was used by the US Army in the Vietnam War.
Tasks include general support, counter-battery fire, and suppression of enemy air defense systems.
The M110A2 version is an M110A1 with a retrofitted muzzle brake and a reinforced barrel to enable stronger propellant charges and the firing of rocket-powered ammunition.
When Army Structure 4 was introduced, 150 M107 field cannons were converted to 203 mm caliber.
The 80 existing M110 howitzers also received the new 8.26 m long L/37 barrel with the distinctive muzzle brake.
After the conversion, the guns were given the designation M110 A2 and now also had a weather protection hood.
Double-block tracks from Diehl replaced the original US tracks.
The combat weight was now just under 28.4 t and the top speed had to be reduced to 30 km/h
