Since the Allies gained air supremacy during World War II, the Wehrmacht had to take appropriate defensive measures. The existing anti-aircraft tanks were not sufficient, so the design of an anti-aircraft tank based on the Pz.Kpfw. V Panther named Coelian commissioned. Two 3.7 cm anti-aircraft guns were to be housed in a closed turret. In May 1944, however, it was decided to use two 5.5 cm anti-aircraft guns instead of the 3.7 cm anti-aircraft guns.

The Coelian never made it to series production. In February 1945 only one Panther chassis was presented with a wooden model of the turret with 3.7 cm anti-aircraft guns.
