The M8 is a light tank developed by the US FMC Corporation. In mid-1992, the US Army selected FMC Corporation (now United Defense LP) as the winner of an international tender to design and build its Armored Gun System (AGS), which was to replace the M551 Sheridan light battle tank in the airborne troops.
Six prototypes were eventually built for the US Army under the name XM8 AGS. The M8 was initially planned for production from 1996. The M8 project was canceled in 1997 for financial reasons, as the US Army focused its priorities on other projects. After the US Army did not place an order, the vehicle was also offered abroad. However, no orders have been placed so far.
The vehicle's main armament is a fully stabilized M35 105mm cannon with autoloader from Rheinmetall. The rate of fire is approximately 12 rounds per minute. A .50 caliber Browning M2 heavy machine gun provides secondary armament.
The M8's hull is made of welded aluminum alloy with a modular armor system that allows the vehicle to be equipped as required. The Level I (Basic) armor package is designed for rapid deployment and in this configuration can be parachuted from a C-130 Hercules. It protects the vehicle from small arms fire and shell splinters. The Level II armor package can still be carried by C-130s, but cannot be parachuted. It is designed for use by light forces in a serious threat environment, while Level III armor is designed for emergency use and is intended to provide protection against portable anti-tank weapons. Level III armor can no longer be carried by the C-130. All versions can be carried by the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III (five and three, respectively). The engine is a Detroit Diesel 6V-92TIA with 550 hp.
