The Canadian Leopard 1 C2 is a modernized German Leopard 1A5 turret added to the original 1978 hulls with the Leopard 2 EMES 18 fire control system developed in Germany in the 1980s.
The Leopard C2 MEXAS tanks deployed were fitted with modular MEXAS armor.
The Modular Expandable Armor System (MEXAS) is a composite armor system developed by the German company IBD Deisenroth Engineering.
These tanks remained in service alongside the Leopard 2A6M in Afghanistan until late June 2011, when combat operations for the Canadian contingent ceased.
