In 1953, the Duster was used for the first time to support armoured units in air defence.
The chassis was based on that of the highly mobile M41 light tank.
The armament consisted of a pair of 40mm anti-aircraft guns in an open turret.
These were also more than effective against ground targets, and the M42 was used in the Vietnam War to support infantry and clear guerrilla positions as well as escort transport vehicles.
