The M113 is an armored personnel carrier (APC) designed and manufactured by Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation (FMC).
The first M113 was sent to the United States Army Europe to replace the Mechanized Infantry's M59 APCs beginning in 1961.
First used in combat by the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) in April 1962, the M113 was the most widely used armored vehicle used by the US Army in the Vietnam War and was used to break through the jungle to attack and overrun enemy positions.
It was widely known by the Allied forces as the "APC" or "ACAV" (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle).
Beginning in 1964, the petrol engine was replaced by a 215 hp (160 kW) 6V-53 Detroit diesel engine to take advantage of the better fuel economy and reduced fire hazard of the diesel engine.
