In 1942, design work began on the Archer, an anti-tank gun on a self-propelled gun carriage.
Intended as an interim solution until a full-fledged solution could be found.
The installation of the gigantic 17-pounder gun on the relatively small chassis of the infantry tank Valentine was a challenge, which the designers of the Archer met with an unusual solution:
They installed the gun backwards so that the fighting compartment occupied the front part of the vehicle.
With armour-piercing rounds, the gun could penetrate 192mm of armour at 914 metres, enough to penetrate any German armour of the time.
Production began in 1944 and the Archer was supplied to the British Army's armoured and infantry divisions, which used it from October.
