It used the chassis of the M5 and had an open-top turret armed with a 75mm howitzer and a 12.7mm M2 machine gun.
About 1800 units were produced from September 1942 to January 1944, with the first M8 in service from mid-1943.
They were used on the Italian and Western Fronts as well as in the Pacific theatre of war for fire support duties.
The M8 was also seen in service with the French Army after the Second World War during the Indochina War.
