Two companies - Daimler-Benz and MAN - submitted design proposals for the new type of tank, whose platform was ultimately selected.
Two final pre-production prototypes were delivered in November 1942 (V1 and V2), and series production of the Panther soon began.
These featured a number of differences compared to the first production variant of the Panther Ausf.D, including a 650 hp engine (instead of the later 700 hp), a 60 mm thick glacis plate and a spherical muzzle brake.
