At the beginning of the Second World War, when the German Wehrmacht was engaged in a blitzkrieg, the need arose for a highly mobile infantry support vehicle that could provide heavy firepower to assist the infantry in breaking through enemy defences.
The Sturmgeschütz III was developed to meet this requirement.
The B version was the first mass-produced variant.
Equipped with a well-armoured casemate superstructure with 50mm front and 30mm side armour and armed with a 75mm StuK 37 L/24, these vehicles were used during the invasion of the Balkans as well as in Operation Barbarossa.
During the war the StuG III evolved into a tank hunter in addition to its role as an assault gun and was often used as a replacement for real battle tanks.
