The new German Wehrmacht used the experience gained in the First World War to implement its modern reconstruction based on motorisation.
Despite the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, capable commanders introduced civilian vehicles into the army and thus created a motorised base. As early as 1940, a battalion consisting of 3 to 4 companies, each with 52 motorbikes with sidecars and 4 motorbikes (single), was integrated into the motorised infantry and armoured divisions.
In addition, motorbikes were present in almost all other units of the Wehrmacht, especially in the reconnaissance units and the pioneer and supply units.
The BMW R 75, produced in 16500 units, together with the Zündapp KS 750 formed the core of the motorised units on all front-line theatres.
The motorbike was armed with an MG 34 mounted on the sidecar.
On the road, the bike reached a top speed of 92 km/h.
