The superior armor protection of the heavy cast turret of the KV-1 Model 1942 tank came at a price! The weight of the tank now reached 47 tons and this weight was considered heavy even for a modern tank standard. The KV series used the same engine with no major changes and with the increased additional weight the top speed dropped from 35 km/h to 28 km/h. Off-road performance was even worse and the tank was difficult to operate. To solve the problem, a lightweight casting turret was developed. One feature helps identify the turret of this type: a large cast ring around the rear machine gun mount.
