The Zero Fighter Type 21, which continued to make good progress in the early stages of the war, also changed in 1945. It was inferior in speed and firepower to the state-of-the-art fighter aircraft of the US Army and Navy that appeared one after another.

Therefore, the Type 52 was developed following the Type 32 and the Type 22. The wingspan was shortened to 11 m from 12 m on the 21st and 22nd models. The hood was redesigned and a single push exhaust pipe was installed to improve speed. This meant the top speed was 565 km/h, which is 25 km/h faster than the Type 22.

In addition, the 20 mm machine gun in the wing was replaced with a 99 Type 2 Type 4 belt-fed 20 mm machine gun. About 6,000 examples of the Type 52 series were manufactured by Nakajima and Mitsubishi. They continued fighting until the end of the Pacific War.
