Series production of these aircraft began at the end of 1942; they did not enter operational squadrons until the beginning of 1943.
In the autumn of the same year the armament was increased and during the war there were further improvements and the production of modernized versions.
The Ki-61 gained the respect of the Allies in the battles for the Pacific. They were part of Tokyo's air defenses, but were not sufficient to combat the B-29 flying fortress.
A total of 3,078 machines of all versions were manufactured.
The last version had a more powerful engine and a teardrop-shaped cabin.
Due to the lack of engines, they were converted to the Ki-100.
