The M1 Improved Performance (M1IP) was an improved model of the original M1 Abrams.
894 M1IPs were produced between 1984 and 1986. The tank featured a new turret similar to that of the M1A1, sometimes referred to as the "Long Turret". The turret offers better protection and a turret basket for better storage of the crew's personal equipment. There were also improvements to the chassis and transmission to compensate for the approximately one ton increase in weight. The armor of the M1IP turret was increased from 650 mm to 880 mm compared to the M1, which was evident in the extended turret front.
