Development began in 1970 and the Merkava Mark 1 was officially introduced into service in 1979.
The Merkava Mark I is the original design of the series, and was designed for mass production.
The Mark I weighed 63 tons and had a 908 hp diesel engine with a power-to-weight ratio of 14 hp/ton. It was armed with the 105 mm M64 L71A cannon, two 7.62 mm machine guns for anti-infantry use and an externally mounted 60 mm mortar.
Based on the experience of the Lebanon operation in 1982, an improved version of the Merkava was developed: the Mk.II.
Merkava Mk.I were retrofitted with some of the Mk.II upgrades, the result was designated the Mk.I Hybrid.
