The main change was the conversion of the engine to the balance point behind the pilot.
The Me 509's propeller was driven by a shaft that sat under the pilot's seat.
After the Me 309 was discontinued in 1944, development of the Me 509 was also discontinued.
At about the same time, development of an engine of the same concept began in Japan.
